| Proof
by David Auburn
One of
the most acclaimed plays of the 1999-2000 season, Proof is
a work that explores the unknowability of love as much as
it does the mysteries of science. Be part of Catherine’s
life, a young woman who has spent years caring for her father,
Robert, a brilliant mathematician in his youth who was later
unable to function without her help. Catherine’s sister
wants to take her back to New York while Hal, a former student
of Catherine's father, hopes to find some hint of Robert's
genius among his incoherent scribblings. As she and Hal become
attracted to each other, they push at the edges of each other's
knowledge, considering not only the unpredictability of genius
but also the human instinct toward love and trust.

Agnes
of God
by
John Pielmeier
At
a convent, fragile, unearthly Sister Agnes gives birth (she
says it's a virgin birth), but the child dies. The police
soon are involved because of the death of the baby. However,
the main conflict is between Mother Superior, who wants
Agnes left alone, and a psychiatrist determined to help
Agnes gain a stronger grasp on reality and uncover any wrongdoers.
When a dead newborn is found, wrapped in bloody sheets,
in the bedroom wastebasket of a young novitiate, psychiatrist
Martha Livingston is called in to determine if the seeming
ly innocent novice, who knows nothing of sex or birth, is
competent enough to stand trial for the murder of the baby.
While searching for answers Dr. Livingston finds herself
inevitably drawn into discovering the truth about the baby's
conception and death. Despite the lack of cooperation that
she receives from her own organization and the church, itself,
she eventually discovers more than she may have bargained
for.

Into
the Woods
by Stephen Sondheim and
James Lapine
Once upon
a time, there was Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Jack
and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and giants, witches, magic and
adventure. These are the fairy tales that have been passed
down for centuries, taking us into lands and treacherous woods
where all of life's dangers lurk. They taught lessons and
morals to generations who listened with a mixture of enchantment,
fear and excitement. Although we knew everything would end
happily ever after, what happens after happily ever after?
Sondheim and Lapine bring together our favorite characters
from the Grimm Fairy Tales for this enchanting tale about
companionship, community and facing the dangers of the woods,
when life and finding true happiness demand it.
